Some Halloween Advice

Things We've Learned From Horror Films....

When it appears that you have killed the monster, NEVER check to see if it's really dead. It isn't.

Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even as a joke.

Do not search the basement, especially if the power has just gone out.

When you have the benefit of a group of people, NEVER pair off and go it alone.

As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.

If you find a town that looks deserted, it's probably for a reason. Take the hint and leave NOW!!

Don't fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you're sure you know what you are doing. Even then, don't do it.

If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are a female. Even though you may be faster than the monster, you can be sure that it WILL catch you.

If your friends suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, get away from them as fast as possible.

Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Meskatonic University, Camp Crystal Lake, Haddonfield, Illinois, one gas station desert towns or any small town in Maine.    (Sorry Betsy)

If your car runs out of gas at night, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help.

Beware of strangers bearing tools such as chainsaws, staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines, lawnmowers, butane torches, soldering irons, or band saws. This is especially true if they are wearing a hockey mask or one made of human skin.

Happy Halloween!

Are you a pumpkin?

What is it like to be a Christian?

It is like being a pumpkin.
God picks you from the patch,
brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you.

Then he cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.

He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc.,

and then He carves you a new smiling face

And puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.

This was passed on to me from a pumpkin.
Now, it is your turn to pass it to one of your pumpkin friends.

Cory: San Diego Child Photographer

Meet Cory.

Soon to be Academy Award Winning Actor.

Well, maybe not REAL soon, but someday.

I got a call from his mom because he needed some head shots for his acting portfolio.

So we met in his beautiful front yard for some quick shots.

What eyes! I'm predicting he will be very successful in his new career!

Andrew: Eagle Scout

Matt was asked to be part of an Eagle Scout color guard for one of San Diego's newest Eagle Scouts.

So of course I offered to take some photos of the big Court of Honor.

From Flag ceremony, to speeches...

Leader presentations to the cake....

The Eagle Scout Charge

The foremost responsibility of an Eagle Scout is to live with honor. To an Eagle Scout, honor is the foundation of all character. He knows that "A Scout is trustworthy" is the very first point of the Scout Law for good reason. An Eagle Scout lives honorably, not only because honor is important to him but because of the vital significance of the example he sets for other Scouts. Living honorably reflects credit on his home, his church, his troop, and his community. May the white of the Eagle badge remind you to always live with honor.
The second obligation of an Eagle Scout is loyalty. A Scout is true to his family, Scout leaders, friends, school, and nation. His loyalty to his troop and brother Scouts makes him pitch in and carry his share of the load. All of these help to build the loyalty which means devotion to community, to country, to one's own ideals, and to God. Let the blue of the Eagle badge always inspire your loyalty.
The third obligation of the Eagle Scout is to be courageous. Courage has always been a quality by which men measure themselves and others. To a Scout, bravery means not only the courage to face physical danger, but the determination to stand up for the right. Trusting in God, with faith in his fellowman, he looks forward to each day, seeking his share of the world's work to do. Let the red in the Eagle badge remind you always of courage.
The fourth obligation of an Eagle Scout is to be cheerful. To remind the Eagle Scout to always wear a smile, the red, white, and blue ribbon is attached to the scroll of the Second Class Scout award, which has its ends turned up in a smile.
The final responsibility of an Eagle Scout is service. The Eagle Scout extends a helping hand to those who still toil up Scouting's trail, just as others helped him in his climb to the Eagle. The performance of the daily Good Turn takes on a new meaning when he enters a more adult life continuing service to others. The Eagle stands as protector of the weak and helpless. He aids and comforts the unfortunate and the oppressed. He upholds the rights of others while defending his own. He will always "Be Prepared" to put forth his best.
You deserve much credit for having achieved Scouting's highest award. But wear your award with humility, ever mindful that the Eagle Scout is looked up to as an example. May the Scout Oath and the Scout Law be your guide for tomorrow and onward.

Feeling Crafty: Tasty Jack O Lanterns

Needed 30 little Halloween gifts.

So I did some thinking and came up with this:

Cute aren't they?

Each little Jack O Lantern sleeve slips over a pouch of microwave ready popcorn.

After I had the idea - the rest was easy.

I made up a little computerized Jack O Lantern and printed it on orange paper....

Did a little folding and gluing....

And Ta DAAAAA.  30 smiling faces finished in no time!

(Email me if you want the pattern to make some yourself!)

How do you mend a broken Jack-o-lantern?
                With a pumpkin patch!

What do you get when you take the circumference of your jack-o-lantern and divide it by its diameter?
                Pumpkin Pi

What do you get when you drop a pumpkin?
                 Squash

Why do Jack O' Lanterns have such silly looks on their faces?
You would too if you just had all your brains scooped out!

Family Fun! San Diego Outdoor Family Photographer

Somehow I forgot to show you this fabulous family!

Two of the sweetest little girls and a baby brother.

You might remember little Nathan from his newborn session?  HERE

We met in the cutest little bitty piece of land called "Butterfly Park."  Fun location for a fun family and a fun set of portraits.

I know they ordered a large wall portrait for their home, and I bet you'll see that family portrait on this year's Christmas cards!

And just as we were finished, I pulled out the bubbles for a little bit of fun!

I think people that have a brother or sister don't realize how lucky they are. Sure, they might not get along all the time, but they know that there's always somebody there, somebody that's family.

The Edge: Harvest Fun Snacks

Okay. I'll give you three guesses.

What was the snack?

Yay for caramel apples!

(Well, yay except for cleaning the pan at the end of the night....)

A quick roll in sprinkles.....

What fun!!

The origin of the candy apple is unclear, but the sweet treat was certainly around at the turn of the century, when they were called candied apples, a more appropriate description. The history of the caramel apple is more well-known. Caramel apples were invented by Dan Walker, a sales representative for Kraft Foods, in the 1950s.

The Edge: Harvest Fun Games

One of the games we played that evening is a really fun team game.  (And frankly, the only game I would ever be tempted to join in - if I didn't have a $4,000 camera around my neck.)

The rules are simple.  Try to keep all the balloons on the OTHER side of the wall.

The kids have so much fun working together smacking balloons until the music stops, then everyone freezes and we count em up and name a winner.

We also played Jack O Lantern Bean Bag toss.  (This is fun until the boys start pegging each other with the bean bags - then we had to move on to the next game...ahem....we want fun but not THAT much fun)

:P

Pumpkin rolls and hay bale relays rounded out the evening......

Games lubricate the body and the mind.

The Edge: The Project

Well, if you've been following along with me on this here blog, you might remember that I am responsible for choosing, preparing and teaching the project for our special Edge night.

This month we are making pumpkin pie.

Well, sorta.

We do some folding, and some gluing....

And ta DAAAA it turns into a slice of pie!

Inside the slice are little slips of paper with questions.  The idea is to pass it around the Thanksgiving table and answer the questions.

Name a blessing from this past year?
What food on the table is your least favorite?
Etc.

I'd be happy to email you the template and the list of questions if you want to make a pie slice for your own Thanksgiving dinner- just email me!
